About TVS Scooty
The TVS Motor Company is an Indian automobile company that is headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. TVS was founded by T. V. Sundaram Iyengar, back in 1911. In the beginning, the company started with a transportation business and owned a large fleet of trucks and buses under the name of southern roadways. In 1962, Sundaram Clayton was founded in collaboration with Clayton Dewandre Holdings. The new company use to manufacture various automotive parts like exhaust, brakes, compressors, etc. In the year 1976, the company set up a manufacturing plant in Hosur to manufacture two-wheelers. TVS rolled out India’s first two-seater moped in 1980 for the manufacturing plant based in Hosur. The company signed an agreement with the Suzuki Motor Company Private Limited of Japan in 1982. The agreement allowed both these brands to share technology, and design to manufacture commercial motorcycles specifically targeted for the Indian market.
The new TVS-Suzuki company brought popular bikes like Suzuki Samurai, Suzuki Shogun and Fiero in the Indian market. In 2001, both TVS & Suzuki parted their ways and the company was renamed TVS Motor Company. There was also a 30-month moratorium period as per the agreement and during this period Suzuki would not enter the Indian market with competing two-wheelers. After the separation with Suzuki, TVS launched the Victor, which was India’s first fully indigenously developed bike. Seeing the demand in the 150cc segment in India, TVS launched the Apache in the market in 2005 which was not really a big hit but signalled the entry of the brand in the 150cc performance segment. TVS has also entered into a partnership with BMW Motorrad in 2013 to developed entry-level performance-oriented bikes.
